LEXINGTON, KY. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology junior Brent Kamer scored with 5:43 left in the second overtime to lift the Fightin' Engineers to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship with a 1-0 win at Transylvania University on Saturday.
With the victory, Rose-Hulman advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second consecutive year and for the third time in the last four seasons.
Junior Dieter Schultz started the game winning play with a crossing pass into the box. Following a scramble for possession, the ball was flipped in the direction of Kamer. The junior headed in his first goal of the season from six yards out to give Rose-Hulman the 1-0 victory.
Transylvania outshot Rose-Hulman 12-6 in the contest, led by four shots from Riley Calhoon. Senior Drew Miller recorded his school record 35th career shutout and 49th career victory with five saves in net. Junior Mike Smyser also had a key save, deflecting a potential score by the Pioneers in regulation above the net to keep the game scoreless.
Kamer led the Rose-Hulman offense with two shots. Senior Andrew Bartush was named HCAC Tournament Most Valuable Player after the championship game for anchoring the back line in a pair of shutouts this week. Rose-Hulman defeated Franklin 2-0 on Wednesday before winning 1-0 at Transylvania.
Rose-Hulman advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the fourth time in school history (2014, 2013, 2011, 2008) with the victory. The Fightin' Engineers advanced to the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen last year with a magical run that included a 1-0 win over undefeated and No. 1 ranked Ohio Wesleyan last November.
Rose-Hulman enters the NCAA Division III Tournament with one of the nation's top ranked defenses, allowing just 14 goals in 21 contests. The Fightin' Engineers are 14-4-3 overall and have recorded 13 shutouts this season.
Rose-Hulman will learn its NCAA Division III Tournament destination during the NCAA selection show on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
