TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team travels to West Terre Haute Wednesday, Dec. 3, to take on its cross town rival St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in the Clabber Girl Trophy game at 7 p.m.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods leads the all-time series 14-7. The Fightin' Engineers, however, have won seven of the previous 10 meetings including a 74-54 victory in the most recent meeting at Hulbert Arena on Jan. 4, 2013.
The game at St. Mary-of-the-Woods will be the first between the two teams on the Pomeroys' campus since the 1999-2000 season. In addition, Rose-Hulman will be playing its first game in the new Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center, which opened on the St. Mary-of-the-Woods campus this year.
Rose-Hulman enters the game with a 3-2 record. The Engineers split a pair of games at Colorado College this past weekend, defeating the host Tigers 59-48 and falling to the Tigers of Iowa Wesleyan 49-48 in the final seconds.
Junior Carrie Morris leads the Engineers offensively averaging 10.6 points per game. Senior Gracie Gibbs averages 7.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Four other Engineers average just over five points per contest.
The Engineers rank 11th in the nation in scoring defense, holding their opponents to 47.6 points per game. Additionally, Rose-Hulman ranks 10th in field goal percentage defense as opponents shoot just 29.7 percent against the Engineers.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods stands at 2-3 on the season. The Pomeroys began the 2014-15 campaign 2-1, but have dropped their last two contests to Earlham (103-83) and Fontbonne (98-87). Desiree Irizarry leads St. Mary-of-the-Woods with 13.0 points per game. Juniors Shelby Palmer and Grace Ziegler average 11.8 and 11.6 points per game respectively.
The Pomeroys average 90.2 points per game and surrender 86.4 points per game. In contrast, the Engineers average 54.8 points per game and give up just 47.6 points per game.
After the Clabber Girl Trophy game, Rose-Hulman begins Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play at home Saturday, Dec. 6, against defending champion Transylvania at 1 p.m. St. Mary-of-the-Woods also plays on Dec. 6 as the Pomeroys travel to Robert Morris-Peoria for a 3 p.m. contest.
