TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team opens the new year Saturday, Jan. 3, when the Fightin' Engineers travel to Bluffton University for a 1 p.m. contest.
Rose-Hulman is looking to return to winning ways as the Engineers fell at Illinois Wesleyan 70-55 on Dec. 20. The two teams were tied 29-29 at halftime before the Titans pulled away with 41 second-half points for the victory. Senior Gracie Gibbs led the Engineers with a career-high 20 points and four blocks in the loss. Sophomore Josie Schmidt added nine points and three rebounds while sophomores Abbie Marshall and Jamie Loving each notched nine points. In addition, Loving grabbed eight rebounds.
As of Dec. 30, Rose-Hulman ranks 14th in the nation in scoring defense (50.0) and 30th nationally in field goal percentage defense (32.4).
Gibbs and Marshall continue to lead the team in scoring and rebound with Gibbs averaging 9.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Marshall averages 7.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest.
The Beavers come into the game with a 7-3 record including a 2-1 mark in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play. Four Beavers average in double figures with Taylor Whitaker leading Bluffton averaging 13.8 points per game.
After the game at Bluffton, Rose-Hulman continues HCAC play hosting Earlham on Jan. 7. The game marks only the second home contest for the Engineers all season and the first since Dec. 6 vs. Transylvania.
