TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - After a 66-58 victory over St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in the Clabber Girl Classic on Wednesday, Dec. 3, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team opens Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) hosting defending champion Transylvania Saturday, Dec. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
In the Fightin' Engineers' victory at St. Mary-of-the-Woods, senior Gracie Gibbs and sophomore Abbie Marshall both notched double-doubles. Gibbs scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Marshall added a season-high 13 points and 10 boards. Sophomore Josie Schmidt narrowly missed a double-double herself, scoring nine points and grabbing nine rebounds.
The victory over the Pomeroys was the first game played between the two schools at St. Mary-of-the-Woods since the 1999-2000 season. Rose-Hulman retains the Clabber Girl Trophy for the third consecutive year.
Junior Carrie Morris leads the team in scoring averaging 9.3 points per game. Gibbs is second averaging nine points per game and leads the team in rebounds, averaging 8.3 rebounds per contest.
As a team, the Engineers ranked 10th nationally in field goal percentage defense as opponents average just 29.9 percent shooting from the field. Rose-Hulman also ranks 11th in scoring defense, allowing just 49.3 points per game.
The Pioneers come into the game with a perfect 5-0 record having defeating Mount St. Joseph 75-42 in their HCAC opener on Wednesday, Dec. 3. The tandem of Katelyn Smith (22.2 PPG) and Nicole Coffman (15.9 PPG) combine for 48 percent of Transylvania's offense. Transylvania currently sits No. 19 in the country in the most recent d3hoops.com.
After the game with Transylvania, Rose-Hulman continues HCAC play at Manchester on Saturday, Dec. 13. The Engineers next play at Hulbert Arena on Jan. 7.
