FRANKLIN, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology junior Helena Bomber scored the lone goal in the 77th minute to lead the Fightin' Engineer women's soccer team over Wilmington University 1-0 in the season opener on Friday night at Franklin College.
Bomber's unassisted goal snapped a scoreless tie and provided the offense necessary in a strong defensive effort. Junior Lucinda Combs recorded her 20th career shutout with 12 saves in the victory.
Wilmington, a perennial title contender in the Ohio Athletic Conference, outshot the Fightin' Engineers 14-6 in the match. Freshman Eliska Saiz led the Rose-Hulman offensive effort with two shots.
Rose-Hulman improved to 1-0 on the season, while Wilmington dropped to 0-1. The Fightin' Engineers square off with Trine University on Saturday at 5 p.m. in another match at Franklin.
