TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Surrendering an early second half goal doomed the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team in a 1-0 loss to Wabash Wednesday, Sept. 24. The defeat marked Rose-Hulman's second loss of the 2014 season including only its first loss at home.
Wabash scored the game-winning goal just 49 seconds into the second half. A shot from Steve Magura was deflected by Rose-Hulman goalkeeper Drew Miller. Unfortunately for the Fightin' Engineers, the rebound came straight to Mike Gore, who shot the ball into the lower corner giving the Little Giants the advantage.
Rose-Hulman had two good chances to score in the second half. The first came off of a free kick from junior Dieter Schultz. The Dyer, Ind., native swung a ball at net from 20 yards out which was tipped over the bar by Wabash net minder Dayton Johnson. The Engineers' final chance came in the final minute of regulation. It was again Schultz who sent a cross into the box. This time, Johnson mishandled the cross, but the live ball was cleared by Wabash before Rose-Hulman could capitalize on the mistake.
Rose-Hulman outshot Wabash 9-6 as well as holding an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks. Miller earned one save in the game.
Rose-Hulman, which came into the game as the nation's 23rd-ranked team, dips to 5-2-2 on the season while Wabash improves to 6-0-2. The Engineers will play their final non-conference game Saturday, Sept. 27, against No. 20 North Park. The game is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
