TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team concluded non-conference play Saturday, Sept. 27, with a 2-0 loss to North Park
Rose-Hulman enjoyed possession in the opening stages of the game. Sophomore Ben Lyon broke through the North Park defense in the eighth minute and fired a shot on net that was saved by Viking goalkeeper Wesley Woodley.
Each team took two shots over the next 20 minutes as much of the possession remained in the midfield. North Park, which ranked No. 20 in the country coming into the game, scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute when a cross found the head of Marcus Ollton to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
Much of the play in the second half was on Rose-Hulman's side of the field. In addition, the intensity of the game picked up as five yellow cards were given in the final 20 minutes. North Park sealed its victory with a second goal in the 77th minute.
The Vikings outshot the Fightin' Engineers 16-6 in the contest including a 10-1 advantage in the second half. Rose-Hulman earned two corner kicks to North Park's one.
Despite allowing two goals, senior goalkeeper Drew Miller saved seven North Park shots on net in the game.
The Engineers, who currently rank No. 23 in the country, conclude non-conference play with a 5-3-2 despite dropping their last three contests. Rose-Hulman opens Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play with 3:30 p.m. game at Defiance on Saturday, Oct. 4.
