Swimming Enjoys Strong Effort at Valparaiso

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology swimming and diving team enjoyed a strong performance in a dual meet against NCAA I opponent Valparaiso University on Saturday, Jan. 10. The men's team defeated the host Crusaders 181.5-80.5 while the women's team fell by a score of 193-58.

On the men's side, the Fightin' Engineers won 11 of 14 events. In the opening event, the 200-medley relay, Rose-Hulman posted the top two times with the team of Kirk Dickson, Pierce Bartine, Patrick King, and Cam Gill winning the event with a  time of 1:39.01. Nate Weber, Marshall Yeoman, Matt Schulstad, and Ben Stone finished with a time of 1:40.59.

In the 1000-freestyle, Rose-Hulman held the top three spots. Matthew King won the event with a time of 10:05.04, while John Rupp and Avery Krovetz finished second and third respectively. The Engineers followed the win by placing first and second in the 200-freestyle. Dickson placed first with a time of 1:48.19 and Paul Hintz settled for second finishing .06 seconds behind Dickson.

King added a winning time of 4:55.72 in the 500-freestyle, and freshman Patrick King brought home top honors in the 200-butterfly.  Gill earned another individual event victory with a 100-backstroke time of 53.75 seconds.

Orion Martin won all three events he participated in; the 50-freestyle (22.02), the 100-freestyle (47.28), and the 100-butterfly (50.78).

Alexander Yaung finished first in the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:01.28. Weber and Schulstad finished second and third, respectively.

The men finished the dual meet with a victory in the 400-freestyle relay. Martin, Dixon, Stone, and Gill swam a time of 3:12.22, nearly six seconds faster than Valparaiso's top team.

On the women's side, Ellie Hong won both the 100-backstroke and the 200-backstroke with times of 1:00.47 and 2:10.75 respectively. The Engineers nearly won the 400-freestyle relay, finishing with a time of 3:51.10.

Both teams take to the pool again on Friday, Jan. 16, against DePauw. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
