TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology freshman Alyzia Dilworth buried two free throws with 20 seconds remaining, and the Fightin' Engineers defended a last second shot to defeat Defiance College 51-50 in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
Dilworth drove to the basket and drew a foul with Rose-Hulman down 50-49, hitting two free throws to give the Engineers the lead again. Defiance worked the ball into the post, but a bank shot at the buzzer by Kelsey Tietje rimmed out as Rose-Hulman won its fourth conference game of the season.
Dilworth and sophomore Josie Schmidt paced Rose-Hulman with 12 points each off the bench. Junior Carrie Morris added seven points, and junior Abbie Marshall scored six. Jamie Loving added 10 rebounds to go along with five points.
Tietje paced the Defiance offensive effort with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Megan Zachrich also reached double figures with 10 points and five assists for Defiance.
Rose-Hulman led by as many as 11 points in the first half and maintained a four-point lead at 47-43 after a Dilworth layup with 2:58 remaining. A key layup by Loving pushed a 47-46 edge to three points for Rose-Hulman at the 1:40 mark.
Defiance answered with a score by Zachrich and two free throws from Whitney Schalk to take its first lead of the second half at 50-49 with 44 seconds left. Dilworth drew a foul on the next possession, setting the stage for the Rose-Hulman victory.
The Fightin' Engineers improved to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while Defiance dropped to 4-9 and 3-3 in league games. Rose-Hulman returns to action with its third straight home contest on Wednesday, this time against in-state foe Franklin College.
