TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Three Engineers scored in double figures, but the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's basketball team dropped a 67-58 decision to Defiance College in a battle of first place teams in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday.
The Fightin' Engineers saw their seven-game winning streak dating back to Dec. 6 snapped and drop to 8-5 on the season and 4-2 in HCAC play. In addition, Defiance's victory over Rose-Hulman is the first since a 62-59 victory at Hulbert Arena during the 2011-12 season.
Senior Corey Povaleri led Rose-Hulman with 14 points and six rebounds. Juniors Matt Loesing and Jimmy Miller each added 10 points. Fellow junior Tyler Duffy provided an all-around effort, notching eight points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Duffy also drew the assignment of guarding Defiance's Bernard Edwards, who led all scorers with 21 points.
Leading 41-39 with 11:48 to play, the Yellow Jackets went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to build a double-digit lead. The Engineers, who trailed by as many as 13 points, cut Defiance's lead to 60-56 with ninety seconds to play. Defiance sealed the game with free throws.
As a team, Rose-Hulman converted 21-57 field goals and 13-15 free throws while Defiance made 22-58 shots from the field and hit 17-20 from the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets held a 42-33 rebounding advantage.
In addition to Edwards, two other Defiance players reached double figures in scoring. Travis Schomaeker scored 16 points and Mason Roth added 13 for the Yellow Jackets.
Rose-Hulman returns to action on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. game at Franklin.
