No. 18 Men's Swimming Topples No. 6 DePauw

COMPLETE RESULTS

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - For the first time in program history, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's swimming and diving team defeated DePauw University. The Fightin' Engineers won the dual meet 155-143 while DePauw's women won 204-82 on Friday, Jan. 16.

"We've had a program for 25 years," head coach Keith Crawford said. "Even though it has been close the last two years, we've never been able to win this meet before. It's an exciting first."

On the men's side, one key event was the 400-IM. Rose-Hulman's Pierce Bartine, Ben Stone, and Alexander Yaung finished in the top three spots in the event. The other important event for the Engineers was the 200-backstroke. Rose-Hulman finished in the top four spots with Stone winning the event with a time of 1:59.35. Cam Gill, Tai Enrico, and Nate Weber finished second, third, and fourth respectively.

"The meet was mathematically over after that [400-IM] race," Crawford said. "The 200-backstroke really swung things around for us and set up an exciting finish.

Matthew King won Rose-Hulman's first event of the dual meet, the 100-freestyle. The Liberty, Ill., native won with a time of 9:58.98, over 13 seconds faster than his competitors. After two second-place finishes, Orion Martin tapped in first in the 100-butterfly with a time of 48.75. Patrick King followed suit, winning the 200-butterfly with a time of 1:56.12. Yaung led the charge for the Engineers in the 200-breaststroke as he won the event with a time of 2:12.36.

Sam Gould won the 1-meter diving contest with a score of 277.65.

On the women's side, Ellie Hong took home first place honors in both the 50-freestyle and the 100-backstroke. The Dayton, Ohio, native won the 50-freestyle by .07 seconds and the 100-backstroke by 1.5 seconds.

Regen Foote won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 228.25.

Rose-Hulman returns to the pool Jan. 24 for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Invitational. The meet, hosted by Franklin College, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
