TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team travels to Transylvania University on Saturday, Jan. 24 for a 1 p.m. contest with the Pioneers.
The Fightin' Engineers enter the contest with a 9-7 record overall and recently finished the first half of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play with a 5-4 record. Rose-Hulman dropped its last contest 71-55 at Hanover. Sophomore Abbie Marshall led the Engineers with 11 points. Sophomore Josie Schmidt and senior Gracie Gibbs chipped in nine and eight points respectively.
Gibbs leads the team offensively averaging 9.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Marshall is second on the team in both categories, averaging 8.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. As of Jan. 18, Rose-Hulman ranks 16th in the nation in scoring defense (50.2) and 29th in field goal percentage defense (32.8).
The Pioneers comes into the contest with as the No. 15 ranked team in the country. Transylvania (15-1, 9-0) has lost only to Maryville all season. The Pioneers return home after winning three road games at Earlham, at Bluffton, and at Franklin. Katelyn Smith (19.8), Nicole Coffman (14.5), and Jordan Fender (11.7) are the three Pioneers who average in double figures.
Transylvania leads the series 16-4. Rose-Hulman's last victory came during the 2012-13 season. The Pioneers won the first meeting 53-51 this season back on Dec. 6.
After the game at Transylvania, Rose-Hulman returns home for a 7:30 p.m. game against Anderson on Wednesday, Jan. 28.
