ANDERSON, Ind. -- Anderson University placed four players in double figures to overcome a 52% shooting effort from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and earn an 87-75 victory in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Hulbert Arena.
Max Mollaun led the Anderson offense with 30 points on 10-15 from the field and 7-7 from the free throw line. Nathan Gross scored 21 points, Brett Anderson added 14 and Justin Jordan scored 13 points for the Ravens.
Sophomore Wade Stallings led the Rose-Hulman offense with a career-high 21 points on 9-14 from the field. Junior Jimmy Miller also reached double figures with 10 points on 4-4 from the field with six rebounds.
Other key contributors to the Engineer offense included senior Corey Povaleri with nine points; sophomore Collin Wojcik with eight points and a team-high seven rebounds; junior Matt Loesing with eight points on 4-6 from the field; sophomore Dillon Reynolds with seven points; and junior Tyler Duffy with six points.
Anderson shot 94% from the free throw line at 29-31 as part of the offensive effort. The Fightin' Engineers outrebounded Anderson 33-29 in the contest.
Rose-Hulman shot 68% from the field in the first half, but trailed the Ravens 39-36 at the break after Mollaun had 19 points in the opening 20 minutes. In the second half, Anderson built an 11-point lead at 60-49 before five straight points from Reynolds brought Rose-Hulman back within 60-54.
Anderson had a double-figure lead again at 70-58, but Rose-Hulman used a 14-6 run to close within 76-72 on a Stallings layup at the 1:59 mark. Anderson pushed the lead back to eight points at 81-75 on a three-point play by Gross, and the Engineers were unable to get closer in the final minute.
Anderson improved to 8-3 in HCAC play and 9-9 overall, while Rose-Hulman stands 10-8 and 6-5 in conference play. The Fightin' Engineers travel to Defiance College on Saturday afternoon.
