TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team continues its quest for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament berth when the Fightin' Engineers travel to Defiance, Ohio, for a 1 p.m. contest. Rose-Hulman enter the contest with a 10-8 record overall and a 6-5 mark in HCAC play.
The Engineers snapped a two-game skid by defeating Anderson 58-42 at Hulbert Arena on Wednesday. In the victory, sophomore Josie Schmidt tied a season-high with 12 points while junior Carrie Morris added ten points. Sophomore Kristen Belyea led the team with a career-high five assists while fellow sophomore Abbie Marshall chipped in eight points, six rebounds, and four assists. Senior Gracie Gibbs leads the team offensively averaging 9.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Marshall is second on the team in both categories, averaging 8.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
As of Jan. 26, Rose-Hulman ranks 29th in the nation in scoring defense allowing opponents 52.4 points per game.
The Yellow Jackets come into the contest with a 6-12 record including a 5-6 mark in HCAC play. Defiance has lost its last two contests, falling 102-70 at Hanover and losing 79-54 to rival Bluffton on Wednesday. Sophomore Kelsey Tietje leads the Yellow Jackets averaging 18.1 points and 12.5 rebounds per contest.
Defiance leads the all-time series 11-7, but Rose-Hulman has won the last three meetings including a 51-50 victory this season in Terre Haute on Jan. 10. In the victory, freshman Alyzia Dilworth sank two free throws with 20 seconds remaining to give the Engineers a one-point lead. On the game's final possession, Tietje missed a six-foot jumper shot to secure Rose-Hulman's one-point victory.
After the game with Defiance, Rose-Hulman travels to Earlham on Wednesday, Feb. 4. The game is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
