TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Trailing 31-29 at halftime, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team used an 18-4 run to open the second half to secure an 78-53 victory over Earlham College in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action Wednesday, Dec. 7.
Both teams shots over 40 percent in the first half, but the Fightin' Engineers' team defense stifled the Quakers in the final 20 minutes. Rose-Hulman converted on 15-21 (71 percent) field goals in the second half compared to just 6-32 (19 percent) for Earlham. In addition, Rose-Hulman allowed just two three pointers in the second half after allowing the Quakers to shoot 5-9 in the first 20 minutes.
Senior Gracie Gibbs led all scorers with 17 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Freshman Alyzia Dilworth scored a career-high 14 points in 4-6 shooting from the field. In addition, the Grand Rapids, Mich., native connected on 6-7 free throws.
Sophomore Kristen Belyea and junior Andi Evers scored 13 and 12 points respectively to round out the scorers in double figures for Rose-Hulman. Both Belyea and Evers notched season-highs in points. Sophomores Abbie Marshall and Josie Schmidt each chipped in eight points and six rebounds.
The Engineers held a distinct rebounding 36-23 rebounding edge in the contest. Additionally, Rose-Hulman converted 23-27 (85 percent) of its free throws in the game.
Rose-Hulman improved to 7-5 on the season and 3-2 in HCAC play, while Earlham dropped to 3-9 and 0-5 in conference games. The Fightin' Engineers host Defiance College on Saturday. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
