TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology junior Ben Lyon scored with 8:12 remaining in regulation to lift the Fightin' Engineer men's soccer team past Franklin College 3-2 on Wednesday night at the Engineer Intramural Field.
Lyon snapped a 2-2 tie with the goal, courtesy of an assist from sophomore Austin Webb. The score was the lone goal of the second half.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the contest. Webb opened the scoring at 9:12, courtesy of a pass from Lyon. Junior Nick Kowalkowski added a goal just 1:10 later on a pass from senior Dieter Schultz to make give the Engineers a two-goal lead.
Franklin fought back to score twice in the first half to knot the score at 2-2. The Grizzlies scored an own goal in the 24th minute to make tjhe score 2-1. Matthew Powell tied the score on a goal, courtesy of a pass from Austin Fundenberger.
The two teams battled for over 40 scoreless minutes before Lyon scored the game winner. Rose-Hulman outshot the Grizzlies 14-1 overall and had six of the eight shots on goal.
Rose-Hulman improved to 8-2-3 on the season and 3-0-1 in HCAC play, while Franklin stands 5-7-1 and 2-2. The Fightin' Engineers host Manchester University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
