TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology scored three goals in a 16-minute span of the second half to top Earlham College 4-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon.
The Fightin' Engineers battled Earlham to a 1-1 tie in the first half, then scored in the 51st, 64th and 67th minute to secure their second straight conference victory. Senior Hayley Gilliam led the performance by having a direct impact on all four goals.
Senior Kate DeMoss opened the scoring at 26:40, courtesy of a pass from Gilliam. Earlham tied the score at 1-1 at halftime on a goal by Abby McCullough.
In the second half, Gilliam scored to put Rose-Hulman ahead 2-1 at the 50:14 mark. The Quakers battled back to tie the match at 2-2 on a score by Cherrah Barclay.
Rose-Hulman sophomore Madeline Romeo scored the eventual game winner at 63:07, courtesy of another Gilliam assist. Freshman Corie Ewoldt provided a key insurance goal at 66:16, off the third assist of the day from Gilliam.
Rose-Hulman outshot Earlham 28-17 in an offensive minded match. Romeo and DeMoss led the Engineers with nine shots each. Senior Lucinda Combs recorded seven saves for the Fightin' Engineers.
Rose-Hulman improved to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in HCAC play, while Earlham dropped to 1-9-2 and 0-5-1 in conference matches. The Engineers return to action with their Senior Day home match against Hanover College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
