TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Hanover College battled to a 2-2 draw on Saturday in a matchup of the teams currently holding the top two positions in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer standings.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the match. Junior Ben Lyon scored four minutes into play, courtesy of an assist by junior Alex Jansen. Sophomore Austin Webb pushed the lead to 2-0 on a pass from sophomore Davis Ferriell.
Hanover battled back with two goals of its own to square the match at 2-2. Walker Goodbub scored with 15 seconds left in the first half to make the score 2-1, then Enrico Franchini knotted the score at 2-2 in the 53rd minute.
The two teams battled the remainder of the way, with Rose-Hulman holding a narrow 13-12 edge in shots. Webb led the Rose-Hulman offense with six shots. Sophomore Carter Wright recorded four saves in net for the Fightin' Engineers.
Prior to kickoff, Rose-Hulman celebrated Senior Day for two members of the team in Mike Smyser and Dieter Schultz. Both players are four-year members of the program.
Rose-Hulman stands 10-2-4 overall and 5-0-2 in HCAC play, while Hanover has a mark of 10-6-1 and 6-0-1 in league matches. The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Wednesday at Anderson University.
