TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology scored three first half goals to defeat Defiance College 4-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer opener for both schools on Saturday at the Engineer Intramural Field.
Alex Jansen scored two first half goals, and Trevor Bednarek added another to pace Rose-Hulman to its sixth win of the year and its first HCAC victory. Ross Klauer contributed an insurance goal in the second half.
Jansen opened the score just 5:06 into the contest on an unassisted goal. Bednarek scored 10 minutes later on an assist from Dieter Schultz. Jansen capped the first half scoring at the 32-minute mark, and Klauer hit the back of the net at 74:24.
Goalkeepers Carter Wright and Michael Lawrence combined for the shutout by playing one half each. The Engineer defensive effort was the key, as Rose-Hulman outshot Defiance 12-1. Austin Webb had a team-high four shots, and Jansen added three.
Rose-Hulman stands 6-2-2 on the season and 1-0 in league play entering Wednesday's home matchup with Mount St. Joseph.
