Women's Basketball Stands 3-1 After Loss to Marietta

BOX SCORE

MARIETTA, Ohio -- Marietta College improved to 6-0 and knocked Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology from the unbeaten ranks with a 57-50 women's basketball victory on Sunday in the Marietta Turkey Shoot.

Junior Josie Schmidt led a balanced Rose-Hulman offensive attack with 12 points.  Schmidt added nine rebounds and two blocks for the Engineers.

Junior Kristen Belyea went 50% from beyond the arc with a total of nine points. Junior Abbie Marshall and freshmen Ally Bromenschenkel and Brianna Gliesmann contributed seven rebounds each.

Senior Cassidy Cain pitched in six points and six rebounds and Gliesmann added five points in the loss.

Lindsey Bernhardt led all scorers with 14 points for Marietta.  Ashley Frasure also reached double figures with 12 points for the Pioneers.

For their efforts, Belyea and Schmidt were named to the Marietta Turkey Shoot all-tournament team following the championship game.

Rose-Hulman and Marietta battled through a defensive minded first half, with the Fightin' Engineers leading 24-19 at the break.  Marietta responded with a 22-point third quarter to take the lead, then held off Rose-Hulman's rally in the final minutes.

Rose-Hulman trailed 51-50 after a layup by Schmidt with 2:48 left, before the defenses forced multiple stops on both ends.  Amisha Herd put the Pioneers up 53-50 with 19 seconds left, and Marietta forced a turnover on the ensuing possession and hit four free throws to secure the win.

Rose-Hulman stands 3-1 on the season after four games on the road.  The Fightin' Engineers open the home schedule on Wednesday Dec. 2 against Illinois Wesleyan.
