BLUFFTON, Ohio -- Bluffton University remained undefeated on the women's basketball season with a 45-36 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Rachel Beining scored 14 points to lead a Bluffton attack that was led by its defense. Rose-Hulman led 13-8 after one quarter, but the Beavers outscored Rose-Hulman 14-4 in the second quarter to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Freshman Ally Bromenschenkel led Rose-Hulman's scoring attack with seven points and seven rebounds. Freshman Brianna Gliesmann added six points, and Kristen Belyea scored five for the Engineers.
Defensively, Rose-Hulman held Bluffton without a three-point goal and kept Bluffton's shooting to just 38 for the game. The Beavers relied on its strong defense by holding Rose-Hulman to 24% shooting for the game.
Rose-Hulman rallied to within two points at 26-24 with 5:14 left in the third quarter on a three-pointer by Belyea. Bluffton answered with seven straight points and held the Fightin' Engineers scoreless for the remainder of the third quarter to take control of the tightly contested matchup.
Bluffton improved to 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in league games. The Fightin' Engineers return to action at home against Illinois Tech on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
