TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology begins the 2016 women's basketball calendar year with a home matchup against Transylvania University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Fightin' Engineers will face a Transylvania team that finished 25-3 last season and won the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship. Rose-Hulman battled the Pioneers in two games decided by less than one possession last season.
Rose-Hulman stands 7-3 overall and 1-2 in HCAC play entering Saturday's contest. The Fightin' Engineers recorded the best single-game offensive and defensive performances in school history during their most recent games, scoring 104 points against St. Mary-of-the-Woods and holding Illinois Tech to just 17.
The balanced Rose-Hulman scoring attack features eight players averaging between 4.5 and 9.2 points per game. Junior Josie Schmidt leads the team in scoring at 9.2 points per game, and the starting frontcourt has featured Ally Bromenschenkel (6.7 ppg) and Abbie Marshall (5.9 ppg). The starting backcourt has included Cassidy Cain (5.6 ppg) and Andi Evers (3.3 ppg).
Other leading scorers for the Fightin' Engineers have included Kristen Belyea (9.1 ppg), Brianna Gliesmann (8.0 ppg), Chiarra Franklin (4.6 ppg) and Alyzia Dilworth (4.5 ppg). A total of 11 players have seen action in eight or more contests.
Transylvania stands 6-4 overall and 2-1 in league play entering Saturday's matchup. The Pioneers feature two of the top scorers in the HCAC in Katelyn Smith (15.8 ppg) and Kristen Hayes (15.4 ppg).
After Saturday's matchup, Rose-Hulman returns to action at home against Hanover College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
