TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on a balanced scoring attack to top Mount St. Joseph University 59-44 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball opener on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Abbie Marshall led the Rose-Hulman offense with 11 points on 4-8 from the field and tallied nine rebounds. Freshman Jenna Queary added eight points and eight players contributed four or more points for the Engineers.
Freshman Abby Bromenschenkel added eight points, and senior Andi Evers was a perfect 3-3 from the field for eight points of her own. Sophomore Alyzia Dilworth and freshman Chiarra Franklin pitched in with six points and four rebounds each.
Junior Josie Schmidt tallied in five blocks in the HCAC opening win, and freshman Ally Bromenschenkel added six rebounds and four points to lead in the paint.
Bristyl Webb led the Mount St. Joseph offense with 16 points, and Ciera Phillips pitched in with twelve rebounds for the Lions.
Rose-Hulman relied on a strong defensive effort to hold Mount St. Joseph to just 22% from the field and 14% from three-point range to key the victory. The Engineers led 19-9 after one quarter and pushed the lead to 34-21 at the half.
Rose-Hulman now stands 5-1 on the season and returns to action with an away Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game against Franklin College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Mount St. Joseph dropped to 0-6 and 0-2 in league play.
