FRANKLIN, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology fell to Franklin College 48-47 in overtime on Wednesday night at the Spurlock Center.
Junior Kristen Belyea led the Rose-Hulman offense with 10 points on 3-7 from the field and 2-3 from behind the arc. Seniors Andi Evers and Cassidy Cain followed with 7 points a piece for the Engineers.
Junior Abbie Marshall added 10 rebounds for the Fightin' Engineers and freshman Chiarra Franklin chipped in 6 rebounds in the matchup.
Junior Josie Schmidt rallied in 3 blocks in the overtime loss and Cain dished out 5 assists.
Katie Brewer led the Franklin offense with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Lauren DeSutter pitched in with 12 points for the Grizzlies.
Rose-Hulman relied on a strong defensive effort to hold Franklin to just 29% from the field and 30% from three-point range in the loss. The Grizzlies capitalized on the Engineers defense on the free throw line with 72% versus Rose-Hulman's 57%. The Engineers tied the game in regulation with 1:04 minutes left in the game with a jumper from Cassidy Cain. Rose-Hulman hit a three at the buzzer of overtime, but it wasn't enough to clinch the victory.
Rose-Hulman now stands 5-2 on the season and returns to action with an away Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game against Bluffton University on Saturday at 1 p.m. Franklin climber to 5-1 and 2-0 in league play.
