TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final three minutes to force overtime, before Mount St. Joseph hit 16-16 free throws in the extra session to earn a 90-73 victory on Saturday afternoon at Hulbert Arena.
Joel Scudder led the Mount St. Joseph offense with 37 points, including a perfect 10-10 on the free throw line and six steals. Erik Edwards added 15 points, Andrew Finley scored 12 and Travis Combs pitched in 11 for the Lions.
Senior Matt Loesing led the Rose-Hulman offense with a career-high 21 points. Loesing also grabbed nine rebounds and finished 8-15 from the field.
Senior Jimmy Miller scored 18 points and added six rebounds, and sophomore Stephen Schueth pitched in with 12 points, five rebounds and five assists. Senior Tyler Duffy also reached double figures for Rose-Hulman with 10 points.
Mount St. Joseph led 65-54 with 3:54 remaining, before Rose-Hulman scored the last 11 points of regulation to force overtime. Loesing, senior Dillon Reynolds and Miller hit two free throws to start the run and bring the margin down to 65-60. Three straight points from Loesing brought the margin down to 65-63 with 46.8 seconds left.
Rose-Hulman forced an Engineer turnover on the next posssession, getting the ball back with 24 seconds left down 65-63. Schueth drove to the basket and scored a layup with four seconds left to tie the score at 65-65. Scudder narrowly missed a halfcourt shot at the buzzer and the game reached overtime.
Mount St. Joseph hit a perfect 16-16 free throws in the extra session to pull away from Rose-Hulman and earn the victory. The Lions finished 26-27 on the foul line for the day.
Mount St. Joseph improved to 3-3 and 2-0 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 3-3 and 0-1 in league games. The Fightin' Engineers return to action at home in a conference matchup against Franklin College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
