RICHMOND, Ind. - A late three-pointer from Earlham College's Lexi McFarland in the final seconds gave the Quakers a 54-51 victory over the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action Wednesday, Feb. 4.
Neither team led by more than five points at any time in the contest. Rose-Hulman held a five-point advantage four different times including with 3:43 to play in regulation when senior Gracie Gibbs connected on a layup.
Earlham scored the game's next five points to tie the game at 49 with 1:15 to play. Senior Sheree Williams game the Engineers the 51-49 edge, but the Quakers scored the game's final five points.
Junior Andi Evers and sophomore Jamie Loving each totaled eight points to lead Rose-Hulman offensively. Gibbs and sophomore Josie Schmidt each added six points. A trio of Engineers (Gibbs, Evers, and sophomore Abbie Marshall) each grabbed five rebounds.
Earlham was led by McFarland with 19 points. Kasin Spay and Hannah Franklin totaled 15 and 12 points respectively.
As a team, Rose-Hulman forced Earlham into 22 tunovers while committing only 13 as team. The Engineers shot 36.8 percent from the field while the Quakers shot 51.2 percent.
Rose-Hulman dips to 10-10 on the season as well as 6-7 in HCAC play. The Engineers return home for four of their final five regular season games, beginning with Manchester on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
