SHENANDOAH, TEXAS -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology sophomore Ellie Hong and junior Orion Martin began competing at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving National Championships on Wednesday at Shenandoah, Texas.
Martin finished 34th in the men's 50-freestyle preliminaries with a season best time of 20.85 seconds. Hong came home 40th in the women's 50-freestyle preliminaries with a time of 24.50 seconds.
Both Hong and Martin will compete in their primary events at the NCAA Division III National Championships later this week. They each earned All-American honors at the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championships, and both have realistic chances of duplicating the feat this season.
Hong stands as the No. 7 qualifier in the 200-backstroke with a 2:00.80. The official psych sheets also show Hong as the No. 14 seed in the 100-backstroke (56.44).
Martin holds the nation's top time in the 100-butterfly (47.92) and is a two-time College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men's Swimmer of the Year. He is also seeded No. 19 in the 200-butterfly (1:50.54).
Hong will compete in the 100-backstroke on Friday and the 200-backstroke on Saturday. Martin will compete in the 100-butterfly on Thursday and the 200-butterfly on Friday.
The top eight finishers in morning sessions each day will compete in the "A" Final for a national championship that evening, and finishers 9-16 in preliminaries will compete in the "B" Final in the night session.
Last year at the NCAA Division III Championships, Martin came home seventh in the 100-butterfly and Hong was eighth in the 200-backstroke. Both swimmers have achieved new school records in each event this season.
