TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology scored three times in the second inning and twice in the eighth in game two to secure a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader split against Defiance College on Saturday.
Rose-Hulman pounded out 13 hits in the nightcap in the 7-1 victory. Defiance won a tight battle in a 1-0 pitching dual in the opener.
Junior Patrick Klima and junior Caleb Kissel paced Rose-Hulman with three hits each in game two. Klima smashed a bases loaded, three-run double in the second inning. Kissel had a double, two RBIs and scored once.
Sophomore Kevin Jendra added a single, a double and one run scored. Junior Josh Koutnik also had a multiple-hit game with two singles, one run and one RBI.
The offensive effort helped senior R.J. Carroll improve to 2-1 on the season. Carroll tossed eight innings and allowed just one unearned run in the victory. He scattered four hits, struck out five and retired the first 11 batters of the afternoon. Junior Alec McNally pitched the ninth to secure the win.
In game one, Defiance scored the lone run in the eighth inning to earn a 1-0 win.
Matt Clark tossed seven shutout innings for the Yellow Jackets, before Jacob Green recorded the final six outs for his first save. Defiance scored its lone run in the eighth inning on a double by Chris Donese, a ground out, and a passed ball.
Junior Karson Nixon took the hard-luck loss for Rose-Hulman, allowing six hits and one earned run in eight inning of work. Nixon walked one with four strikeouts and has an earned run average of 0.70 on the season.
Kissel led the Rose-Hulman offense with three singles. Klima added two singles, and Jendra had a single and a double for the Fightin' Engineers.
Rose-Hulman stands 7-6 on the season and 2-1 in conference play, while Defiance stands 6-5 and 1-2 in league games. The Fightin' Engineers host Franklin College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
