Softball finishes spring trip 7-3

BOX SCORE - MOUNT UNION

BOX SCORE - ST. MARY'S

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team finished its 2015 Spring Trip with a 7-3 record, defeating Mount Union (Ohio) 7-1 and falling to St. Mary's (Minn.) 1-0 on Friday, March 6.

In the victory of the Purple Raiders, the Engineers scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning using a two-run home run from senior Carly Heibel and a two-RBI double to center field from freshman Jessica Will. Rose-Hulman added two more runs in the fourth when Will doubled to right field and a single run in the fifth on yet another double, this one coming off of the bat of freshman Michelle Korf.

Mount Union would score its lone run in the top of the seventh.

As a team, Rose-Hulman tallied 10 hits and three walks compared to 11 hits and one walk for the Purple Raiders.

Individually, Will batted in four of her eight RBI on the season in the victory. Heibel and junior Jett Bender each notched two hits.

Junior Marissa Stout improved to 4-1 on the mound this season allowing one unearned run and striking out one batter.

In the loss to St. Mary's, the Cardinals scored the game's only run in the first inning. After a walk, Kathi Opsahl doubled home what proved to be the game-winning run.

Rose-Hulman had multiple base runners on in both the third and the sixth innings, but could not deliver the breakthrough hit.

Junior Taylor Lockhart took her first loss of the season allowing four hits and three walks while striking out three batters in six innings of work. As a team, Rose-Hulman tallied six hits and drew one walk.

Rose-Hulman's 7-3 record is the best start to a season since the 2008 campaign. The Engineers are scheduled to return to action Saturday, March 14, with a double header against Milwaukee School of Engineering.
