HANOVER, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology earned its fourth straight weekend series victory after sweeping Hanover College 4-1 and 13-6 in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Fightin' Engineers improved to 14-11 overall and 9-6 in conference play with the victory. Rose-Hulman has also won 2-of-3 games in each of its four weekend series thus far in HCAC play.
In the opener, Rose-Hulman relied on a strong pitching performance and timely hitting to earn a 4-1 victory.
Rose-Hulman junior Karson Nixon tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just five hits with nine strikeouts to move to 3-1 on the season. Nixon has also tossed 14.2 consecutive scoreless innings over his last two conference starts. Senior Alec McNally tossed a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.
Offensively, junior Nevin Fansher led the offense with three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs in the game one victory. Junior Donnie Waters had two hits with a double and one run scored. Junior Zach Hull also had a multiple-hit game with two singles.
In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman scored six times in the fourth and three times in the fifth to pull away for a 13-6 win.
Hanover jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two innings, before Rose-Hulman scored 10 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take control of the contest. The Fightin' Engineers pounded out 15 hits in the victory.
Junior Patrick Klima and sophomore Kevin Jendra led the Rose-Hulman offense with three hits each. Klima had two singles, one double, scored twice and had four RBIs. Jendra pitched in with three hits, including a double, with two RBIs.
Other key offensive contributors included junior Caleb Kissel with two singles, two runs scored and three RBIs; senior Josh Hoeing with two runs scored and a single; and sophomore Josh Koutnik with a single, one run scored and three RBIs.
Senior Ben Menich picked up the victory with four strong innings in relief. Menich allowed four hits and one earned run with one walk and four strikeouts for his first win of the season. Three other relief pitchers combined to hold Hanover to one run over its last three at bats.
Matt Newman led the Hanover offense with three hits in the nightcap. Three Panthers added two hits each. Hanover dropped to 10-13 overall and 6-9 in league play.
The Fightin' Engineers return to action with a home game against Franklin College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
