TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Franklin College scored two unearned runs in the ninth inning to snap a 6-6 tie and earn an 8-6 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a tightly contested Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball matchup on Tuesday night.
Rose-Hulman rallied from a 6-2 deficit with four runs in the seventh inning to tie the score at 6-6. Franklin responded with two runs in the ninth to earn its 13th victory of the season.
Rose-Hulman had seven hits and through patience at the plate drew 12 walks in the contest. Junior Kody Alayon had two singles and scored once, and junior Donnie Waters added two singles, one run and one RBI. Junior Caleb Kissel contributed a solo home run, scored twice and had two RBIs.
Senior Josh Hoeing drew four walks at the plate, and junior Nevin Fansher had three walks to contribute to the offensive performance. Senior R.J. Carroll led the pitching effort by allowing one run with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.
Dylan Reyher finished 4-4 at the plate for Franklin, and Jason Simpkins added three hits and scored twice for the Grizzlies. Hayden Cleveland recorded the final five outs with two strikeouts to pick up the pitching win.
Franklin improved to 13-15 overall and 6-9 in conference play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 14-12 and 9-7 in league games. The Fightin' Engineers return to action with a home matchup against DePauw on Thursday at 7 p.m.
