LEXINGTON, Ky. –Rose-Hulman softball freshman Jessica Will cleared the bases with a double to left field in the sixth inning to propel the Fightin' Engineers to a 7-6 victory over Transylvania University in game one of a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) doubleheader on Saturday, April 11. The Engineers dropped the nightcap 6-0.
In the game one victory, Rose-Hulman fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, but freshman Jenny Miller hit her fourth home run in the third inning to tie the game 2-2. The game would remain tied until the Pioneers (11-12, 4-1 HCAC) used three hits to score two runs in the fifth.
Needing a rally, the Engineers loaded the bases in the top of the sixth. Junior Jett Bender moved everyone up one game with an RBI single through the right side to pull Rose-Hulman within a single run. Will then delivered the game's key hit with a 3-RBI double to left field. Freshman Gabbi Markison drew a walk later in the inning scoring another run to put the Engineers up 7-4.
Transylvania got two of the three runs back in the bottom of the sixth with a homerun. Lockhart shut down the Pioneers in the seventh notching her fifth victory of the season. The Robinson, Ill., native gave up eight hits and two earned runs while striking out four in seven innings of work.
Will went 2-3 from the batter's box with three RBI and one walk. Bender and freshman Michelle Korf also had two hits each.
In game two, Bender tallied the lone Engineers hit. Senior Carly Heibel took her first loss of the season allowing four earned runs and striking out four in 3.1 innings of work. Lockhart, the winner of game one, allowed just two hits in the final 2.2 innings in relief.
Rose-Hulman now stands at 14-6 on the year and 3-3 in HCAC play while Transylvania is 12-12 and 5-1 in conference play.
The Engineers have a quick turnaround as they travel to Spalding for a doubleheader tomorrow (Sunday), April 12. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Jefferson High School.
