HANOVER, Ind. -- Hanover College relied on a balanced team performance to earn a 4-3 and 5-2 doubleheader sweep over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
After the game, it was announced that Sunday's doubleheader at Manchester University has been postponed until Sunday April 26 due to projected thunderstorms. The start time will be announced later.
The Panthers scored twice in the bottom of the eighth in game one to earn an extra-inning win. Rose-Hulman rallied from a 3-0 deficit to close within 3-2 in the nightcap, before Hanover scored two insurance runs to secure the win.
In the opener, Rose-Hulman rallied from a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the second inning to tie the score at 2-2. The Engineers took advantage of one Hanover fielding error, before Michelle Korf tied the score at 2-2 on a sacrifice fly.
The two teams battled without a score change until the eighth inning, when Rose-Hulman scored once in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Gabbi Markison. Hanover answered with a game winning double to earn a 4-3 win.
Senior Jessica Ahlborn led the Rose-Hulman offense with two hits, including a double, and one run scored. Senior Carly Heibel had one single and scored once, while Markison had a single and an RBI. Freshman Jenny Miller earned the tough luck loss in the circle, allowing just one earned run in 7.2 innings of work.
McKenzie Witt and Tori Luster led the Hanover game one offense with three hits each. Anna Phillippe tossed the complete game in the circle to pick up the win.
In game two, Hanover scored twice in the first and once in the second inning to build a 3-0 lead. Korf closed the margin to 3-2 with a two-run home run for Rose-Hulman, but the Panthers added two insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Korf finished 2-2 with two RBIs, one run scored and a home run to lead the Rose-Hulman offense. Jett Bender added two singles for the Engineers, and Marissa Stout contributed a double to the performance.
Hanover had 11 hits in the nightcap, with three players having two hits each. Lyndsea Burke led the Panthers with a triple and three RBIs.
Hanover improved to 14-8 overall and 6-4 in conference play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 17-9 and 5-5 in league play. The Fightin' Engineers return to action with a conference matchup at Anderson University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
