TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team improved to 19-11 on the season with a sweep of Webster University 12-3 in six innings and 14-13 in eight innings on Thursday, April 23.
In game one, freshman Michelle Korf launched a grand slam over the left field fence as part of a five-run second inning propelling the Fightin' Engineers to victory. In game two, Korf hit a walk-off single in the eighth inning after the Engineers game back from four runs down to tie the game in the seventh inning.
In the game one victory, the Gorlocks jumped ahead 2-0 in the second inning, but the Fightin' Engineers plated five runs in the second, two runs in the third, and three runs in the fourth to take a 10-3 advantage. Senior Jessica Ahlborn ended the game with a walk-off home run in the sixth inning, her second of the season.
Senior Carly Heibel notched her third victory of the season allowing five hits and striking out two in six innings of work. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native also finished 3-3 from the plate with four runs scored. Korf finished 2-3 with five RBI while Ahlborn was also 2-3 with three RBI.
In game two, Webster strung five consecutive hits together as part of a four-run second inning to take a 4-1 lead. Freshman Jenny Miller responded with a two-run home run to left field in the bottom half of the frame to cut the Gorlocks lead to one.
Webster (10-23) would tack on two more runs in the fourth, but Rose-Hulman responded once again with a three-run fifth to tie the game 6-6.
After Webster took an 8-6 lead in the top of the sixth, Ahlborn hit a sacrifice fly to right field and sophomore Janel Lake followed with a two-RBI single to right field to give the Engineers a 9-8 advantage.
All seemed lost in the top of the seventh, however, when Laura Zeegers drove in three runs on her fifth hit of the day and Kaylyn DeCock hit a home run to right center. Rose-Hulman entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 13-9.
Rose-Hulman would not be denied as junior Marissa Stout singled home freshman Jessica Will to get the Engineers within three runs. A batter later, Miller broke the single-season home run record by hitting a 3-1 pitch over the center field wall for her seventh home run of the season.
With the score tied 13-13, Heibel prevented Webster from scoring in the eighth and Korf singled home the winning run.
Stout finished 4-5 in the game while Heibel and Lake each added three hits. Miller finished 2-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. In total, the Engineers tallied 18 hits while Webster had 16.
Two school records were tied in the remarkable nightcap. Miller tied Rose-Hulman's single-game school record with two home runs. The Fightin' Engineers also tied a single-game team school record with four round trippers.
Rose-Hulman incrased its home run total to 20 on the season with six blasts in the doubleheader.
Rose-Hulman (19-11) sits one run away from its first 20-win campaign since the 2008 season. The Engineers host Mount St. Joseph for Senior Day on Saturday, April 25.
