NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team split a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) doubleheader with Manchester University winning game one 2-1 and dropping game two 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
In the victory, freshman Gabbi Markison delivered a two-out, RBI-single down the left field line in the seventh inning to give Rose-Hulman a 2-1 win.
The Fightin' Engineers opened the scoring in the fifth inning on an RBI-double from freshmanJessica Will. Manchester answered, however, with a run of its own in the sixth inning.
In the seventh, freshman Michelle Korf led off the inning with a double to right center. After a failed bunt attempt, Will grounded out to shortstop advancing Korf to third base. Markison then delivered the game-winning hit.
Senior Carly Heibel improved to 5-1 on the season with a complete-game victory. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out one.
Will and Korf were the two Engineers that collected multi-hit games. Markison, junior Marissa Stout, and freshman Jenny Miller also added base hits in the contest.
In game two, Stout opened the scoring in the third inning with and RBI-single to left center. Senior Jessica Ahlborn added a second run for Rose-Hulman with a single to center field in the fifth inning.
Manchester (16-15, 9-7 HCAC) tied the game in the bottom half of the fifth using two runs and a walk. The Spartans would win the game in the seventh using a a triple and a wild pitch.
Rose-Hulman outhit Manchester 10-5 in game two. Markison, Stout, and Korf each added two base hits in the contest.
Rose-Hulman (20-12, 6-8 HCAC) reaches the 20-win plateau for the first time since the 2008 season. The Engineers will conclude their regular season tomorrow (Monday) with Senior Day against Mount St. Joseph. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
