TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman men's soccer team kicked off the 2015 season with a 2-1 victory over Centre College on Tuesday night at the Engineer Intramural Field.
Freshman Ross Klauer opened the scoring in the 60th minute with his first career goal, courtesy of a pass from junior Nick Kowalkowski. Centre knotted the match at 1-1 with a score by Jacob Trumbell in the 63rd minute.
Rose-Hulman added the game winner in the 76th minute, when Stephen Varkoly scored off a pass from Ben Lyon. The Engineers relied on a strong defensive effort in the final 15 minutes to secure the win.
Carter Wright picked up his first goalkeeping victory at Rose-Hulman with a strong performance. Wright tallied five saves, including two at point-blank range, to preserve the victory. Centre outshot the Engineers 11-7 in the tightly contested matchup.
Rose-Hulman stands 1-0 on the season, while Centre dropped to 0-1. The Fightin' Engineers host Principia College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
