TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology dropped a five-set decision to Westminster University (Mo.) and a three-set matchup with St. Mary's College to open the Millikin Invitational on Friday night.
Westminster topped the Engineers 25-18, 25-27, 25-22, 21-25, 16-14 in a two-plus hour marathon battle in the opener. Senior Sarah Jensen smashed 21 kills to lead the Rose-Hulman offensive effort, and freshman Julia Hammond contributed 13 kills. Jensen also had 24 assists to lead the team.
Two other players recorded double figures in assists, as freshman Marissa Gollnick had 15 assists and junior Morgan Dreyer added 12. Sophomore Mackenzie Gossard recorded four total blocks, and junior Emily McLendon pitched in with three blocks.
Sophomore Gabi Razma had a team-high 21 digs, and sophomore Alison Rogozinski tallied 11 digs.
In the nightcap, St. Mary's topped the Engineers 25-23. 25-22. 25-18. Sophomore Becca Poppel had a team-high nine kills, and freshman Bailey MacInnis contributed four kills. Jensen had 12 assists, and Razma led the team with 10 digs. McLendon paced the front row with two block solos and two block assists.
Rose-Hulman dropped to 8-5 overall and faces Millikin and Wisconsin-La Crosse in a pair of matches on Saturday at the Millikin Invitational.
