WHEATON, Ill. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology battled one of the nation's premier men's soccer programs in Wheaton College to a 2-2 draw on Saturday night in suburban Chicago.
Rose-Hulman stands 4-2-1 against a Wheaton team that was ranked No. 2 nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason national poll.
Two players combined for the four goals in a match played at a high level. Sophomore Turner Perkins scored twice for Rose-Hulman, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead with 30 minutes remaining in regulation. Sophomore Trevor Bednarek was credited with an assist on the first Perkins goal.
Wheaton forward Marshall Hollingsworth scored the first goal of the match, then tied the score in the 61st minute with another tally.
Rose-Hulman sophomore goalkeeper Carter Wright was a key story in the match, recording 13 saves for the Fightin' Engineers. Wheaton outshot Rose-Hulman 34-6, but the Fightin' Engineers kept the number of scoring chances to a minimum to earn a hard fought road draw.
Rose-Hulman (4-2-1) returns to action on Wednesday with a matchup at in-state rival DePauw. Wheaton stands 3-2-1 on the season.
