GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology handed DePauw University its first loss of the season with a 3-2 overtime victory in a men's soccer battle of regionally ranked teams on Wednesday night in Greencastle.
The Fightin' Engineers improved to 5-2-1 on the season with an own goal at the 6:59 mark of overtime. DePauw dropped to 5-1-1 on the year. The Tigers entered the game ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region in this week's NSCAA poll, while Rose-Hulman was receiving votes in the same poll.
Rose-Hulman led 2-1 at halftime, courtesy of two goals scored three minutes apart. Alex Jansen scored at the 17:31 mark on an unassisted goal. Ben Lyon added the second goal at 19:27, on a pass from Jansen.
DePauw tied the score at 2-2 on a goal by E.J. Moore. The teams battled into overtime, when Rose-Hulman won on a deflected ball into its own goal by DePauw.
The game winning play began with Austin Webb making a pass to Mike Smyser near the DePauw box. Smyser sent a hard crossing pass near the DePauw goal which was deflected in by a Tiger defender.
DePauw narrowly outshot Rose-Hulman 12-9 in the contest. Winning goalkeeper Michael Lawrence recorded saves in goal for the Fightin' Engineers.
Rose-Hulman stands 5-2-1 and hosts Illinois Wesleyan University on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Engineer Intramural Field.
