ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology scored four first half goals and relied on a solid defensive effort to top St. Mary-of-the-Woods College 5-0 in women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Kate DeMoss led the Rose-Hulman offensive performance with two goals. DeMoss leads the Fightin' Engineer offense with five goals this season.
Sophomore Eliska Saiz scored her second goal of the season to provide balance to the offensive attack. Senior Hayley Gilliam and freshman Samantha Jacobs each scored their first goal of the season as Rose-Hulman bested its previous season high with five goals in the match.
DeMoss opened the scoring just 2:04 into the contest after converting on a pass from Saiz. Gilliam pushed the score to 2-0 with an unassisted goal.
In the 26th minute, Jacobs scored off a corner kick to make the score 3-0. Gilliam provided the assist. Saiz rounded out the first half scoring with a goal at the 30:01 mark.
In the second half, DeMoss scored again on the second assist of the day from Gilliam. Rose-Hulman outshot the Pomeroys 19-8 overall in the match.
Senior Lucinda Combs recorded three saves to earn her 33rd career shutout in goal. DeMoss led the balanced offensive attack with five shots.
Shannon Sonderman had three saves, and Georgie Macy recorded two for St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Cami Navarra fired a team-high four shots for the Pomeroys, and Kylee White added three.
Rose-Hulman improved to 4-5 on the season, while St. Mary-of-the-Woods dropped to 1-7. The Fightin' Engineers host Defiance College in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference season opener on Saturday at 1 p.m.
