ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology split a pair of matches at the Washington University Volleyball Invitational on Friday night.
The Fightin' Engineers narrowly dropped a hard fought 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 21-25, 20-18 decision to North Central College to open the Invitational. Rose-Hulman rebounded for a 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 sweep of Webster University in the nightcap.
The first match last well beyond the scheduled match length, as the teams tied at 15, 16, 17 and 18 prior to North Central scoring the final two points of the match. North Central improved to 4-0 on the season with the narrow victory.
Freshman Julia Hammond led Rose-Hulman with 13 kills and added 17 digs. Sophomore Morgan Dreyer added a triple-double with 11 kills, 19 assists and 12 digs. Senior Sarah Jensen pitched in with eight kills, 23 assists and 17 digs.
Other statistical leaders included freshman Bailey MacInnis with nine kills, sophomore Gabi Razma with 28 digs, and sophomore Mackenzie Gossard with five blocks.
In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman relied on a balanced offensive attack to defeat Webster. Hammond and MacInnis had seven kills each, with Dreyer, Gossard and Emily McLendon adding six each. Freshman Marissa Gollnick had 13 assists, with Dreyer contributing 12.
Gossard pitched in with two service aces and Razma contributed 12 digs to the performance.
The Fightin' Engineers will square off with Rhodes (9:30 a.m. CT) and Blackburn (11:30 a.m. CT) on Saturday in day two of the Washington University Invitational.
