Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Engineers Past Transy

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on a balanced scoring attack and 13-of-14 free throws to defeat Transylvania University 68-60 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Charlie Aimone led the Rose-Hulman offense with 17 points and added six rebounds.  Aimone finished 5-9 from the field and 6-6 from the free throw line in the performance.

Senior Dillon Reynolds added 11 first half points and five assists, while senior Tyler Duffy had a well rounded performance of 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Fightin' Engineers.

The balanced Rose-Hulman attack also featured sophomore Stephen Schueth with nine points, and senior Jimmy Miller with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Transylvania was led by 25 points from Cooper Theobald on 9-13 from the field and 7-10 on the free throw line.  Alex Jones had 14 points, and Parker Stansberry scored nine for the Pioneers.

Other key contributors for Rose-Hulman included freshman Luke Callahan and senior Matt Loesing with six points and five rebounds each.

Rose-Hulman shot 46% from the field for the game and hit 13-14 free throws to provide offensive support.  The Fightin' Engineers also outrebounded Transylvania 43-29 and held the Pioneers to 38% from the field.

Transylvania held an early two-point lead, but Rose-Hulman took the lead for good at the 14:33 mark of the first half.  The Fightin' Engineers led 35-26 at the break behind 11 first half points from Reynolds.

In the second half, Transylvania trimmed the margin to three points at 46-43, but Rose-Hulman took control with an 8-2 run that pushed the lead to nine points at the 6:16 mark of the second half.  Transylvania could not trim the margin to less than five the rest of the way.

Rose-Hulman improved to 9-8 overall and 6-4 in HCAC play, while Transylvania dropped to 6-11 and 5-5 in league games.  The Fightin' Engineers host Hanover College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
