TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology looks to extend its 10-game women's basketball winning streak with a showdown against nationally ranked Bluffton on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Fightin' Engineers (15-3) host undefeated No. 21 ranked Bluffton University (18-0) in a showdown between the top two teams in the HCAC.
Saturday's game is Breast Cancer Awareness Day, and we are also celebrating the 20th Anniversary of women's basketball at Rose-Hulman. The presentation for the Breast Cancer Awareness Day featuring over 50 local cancer survivors will begin at 2:45 p.m. following the men's game. Returning alumni women's basketball players will be introduced at halftime of the women's game.
Rose-Hulman stands 15-3 overall and 9-2 in HCAC play entering Saturday's game after a 80-63 win over Hanover on Wednesday evening. The Fightin' Engineers shot 43% from the field, including 50% from behind the arc. The offense was led by freshman Chiarra Franklin (14 pts), along with three other Engineers that reached double figures.
The balanced Rose-Hulman scoring attack features eight players averaging between 5.4 and 8.2 points per game. The starting frontcourt has featured Ally Bromenschenkel (8.1 ppg, 53% from the field), Josie Schmidt (7.4 ppg) and Abbie Marshall (6.2 ppg). The starting backcourt has included seniors Cassidy Cain (6.0 ppg) and Andi Evers (3.3 ppg).
Other leading scorers for the Fightin' Engineers have included Kristen Belyea (7.8 ppg), Brianna Gliesmann (7.7 ppg), who leads the HCAC in three-point percentage (57%), Chiarra Franklin (5.9 ppg) and Alyzia Dilworth (5.8 ppg). A total of 12 players have seen action in 12 or more contests.
Bluffton stands 18-0 (11-0 HCAC) on the season and the Beavers beat Rose-Hulman on 45-36 in the previous matchup on Dec. 12. The Bluffton women's basketball team comes into this matchup ranked 21st in the D3hoops national top 25 poll and 23rd in the WBCA poll.
Bluffton leads Rose-Hulman 11-8 in the series including an 11-8 record in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Bluffton has won the last four meetings between the two teams.
Rose-Hulman has achieved a 15-3 start to the season due in large part to its defense. The Fightin' Engineers are leading the conference in allowing just 53.0 points per game and holding their opponents to 33% from the field and 26% from three-point range. Rose-Hulman also outrebounds its opponents by +10.2 rebounds per game.
After Saturday's matchup, the Fightin' Engineers will face Franklin at home on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
