Rally Falls Short as Fightin' Engineers fall to DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman's late rally fell short on Saturday as the women's basketball team fell in the DePauw Tipoff Tournament championship game to host DePauw by a final score of 52-47.

The Fightin' Engineers found themselves in an early hole, trailing 18-2 after the first quarter of play. Rose-Hulman did not get on the scoreboard until the 2:30 mark in the first quarter after Brianna Gliesmann made two free throws.  The Fightin' Engineers found their stride offensively in the second quarter and outscored the Tigers 15-14 in the period but trailed 32-17 at halftime.

DePauw extended their control of the game in the third period and led by 22 at one point in the quarter 47-25.

However, the Fighitn' Engineers rallied.  In the fourth quarter RHIT used a 9-2 run over four and a half minutes to cut the DePauw lead down to 49-41.  Rose-Hulman forced several late turnovers and got within two points at the 1:14 mark after a pair of Ally Bromenschenkel free throws made the score 49-47 DePauw.  After a timeout the Fightin' Engineers stole the ensuing inbounds pass and used their final timout to set up a play.  Unfortunately Rose-Hulman turned the ball back over to DePauw and was forced to foul then remainder of the way.

Senior Josie Schmidt led all scorers in the contest with 18 points.  She also grabbed six rebounds. The Fightin' Engineers shot just 31.1% (14-45) from the field and the team was just 1-11 from three-point range.  Rose-Hulman did well at the foul line making 18 of 22 attempts, good for an 81.8% clip.

The loss drops RHIT to 1-1 on the season.  Their next game will be at St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Monday November 21 at 7 p.m.
