TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology could secure at least a share of its first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship in Saturday's 1 p.m. Senior Day home matchup against the Defiance College Yellow Jackets.
Rose-Hulman stands 21-3 overall and 15-2 in HCAC play entering Saturday's game after a 59-36 win over Anderson University on Wednesday evening. The Fightin' Engineers shot 44% from the field, and were led by junior Josie Schmidt (14 points) and freshman Brianna Gliesmann (12).
The Fightin' Engineers have won 21 games in a season for the second time in program history. The 2006-07 team finished 21-5 and won a then school record 11 games in a row as the top previous team in school history. Rose-Hulman is currently on a school record 16-game winning streak and is ranked No. 7 in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region rankings.
Rose-Hulman will honor seniors Cassidy Cain, Andi Evers and Carrie Morris prior to their final regular season home game on Saturday. Cain has appeared in 77 games with 76 starts and career totals of 421 points, 195 assists, 188 rebounds and 82 steals. Evers has appeared in 91 games with 37 starts and career totals of 300 points, 218 rebounds and 86 assists. Morris has made 96 apperances with 49 starts and career totals of 455 points, 152 rebounds, 91 assists, 46 steals and 22 blocks at Rose-Hulman.
The Fightin' Engineers received three votes in the d3hoops.com national top 25 this week and enter Saturday's game tied for first place in the HCAC with Bluffton.
Rose-Hulman would secure at least a share of the first women's basketball conference championship in program history with a win on Saturday. The Fightin' Engineers need a win and a loss by Bluffton to clinch hosting rights for the HCAC Tournament. If the top four teams in the league all win on Saturday, a coin toss will determine the order of the top HCAC Tournament four seedings and also determine the tournament site.
The balanced Rose-Hulman scoring attack features eight players averaging between 5.5 and 8.0 points per game. The starting frontcourt has featured Ally Bromenschenkel (8.0 ppg, 55% from the field), Josie Schmidt (7.4 ppg) and Abbie Marshall (5.5 ppg). The starting backcourt has included seniors Cassidy Cain (5.5 ppg) and Andi Evers (3.4 ppg).
Other leading scorers for the Fightin' Engineers have included Kristen Belyea (6.4 ppg), Brianna Gliesmann (7.1 ppg) who is first in the HCAC in three-point percentage (52%), Chiarra Franklin (5.7ppg) and Alyzia Dilworth (6.3 ppg). A total of 13 players have seen action in 12 or more contests.
Defiance stands 7-17 overall and 6-11 in league play entering Saturday's matchup. The Engineers beat the Yellow Jackets 75-53 on January 16th.
Defiance leads Rose-Hulman 12-8 overall and 11-8 in HCAC play. Rose-Hulman has won the last meeting against Defiance in the series.
Saturday's game is also Chick-Fil-A Day and if either Fightin' Engineer the men's or women's team scores 75 points, everyone in Hulbert Arena will receive free Chick-Fil-A!
After Saturday's matchup, Rose-Hulman has clinched a first round bye in the HCAC Tournament and will play on Friday, February 26th at a site to be determined.
