TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology extended its school record winning streak to 17 games and won a share of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball regular season championship with a 61-48 win at Hulbert Arena over Defiance College Saturday afternoon.
Rose-Hulman earned its school record 22nd win on the season and completed the regular season with a 22-3 mark. Earlier this week, the Fightin' Engineers were ranked No. 7 in the NCAA DIII regional rankings, and received three votes in the d3hoops.com national poll.
Rose-Hulman also captured the first women's basketball conference championship in school history with the performance. The Fightin' Engineers lost a coin flip with Bluffton University for hosting rights to the HCAC Tournament, and will open the tourney in the semifinal round on Friday at 8 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
Junior Josie Schmidt led a balanced Rose-Hulman scoring attack with 12 points and five blocks in the win. Senior Cassidy Cain added nine points, nine assists, and four steals.
Other key contributors to the balanced attack included freshmen Ally Bromenschenkel with eight points and six rebounds and Brianna Gliesmann with eight points.
The Fightin' Engineers also celebrated Senior Day for three members of the squad. Cain, senior Andi Evers and senior Carrie Morris all started on Senior Day. Evers scored five points with three rebounds, and Morris had two steals on the afternoon.
Defensively, Rose-Hulman held Defiance to just 24 points each half and 28% from the field. The Engineers also had 12 turnovers compared to Defiance's 21 in the matchup.
Rose-Hulman also won its 17th consecutive game and its 15th straight conference contest. The Fightin' Engineers shot 44% from the field in the victory.
Regular season accomplishments included the program's first conference title; a school record 22 wins; a school record 17-game winning streak; the 100th career coaching victory for Jon Prevo; and the first conference tournament bye in program history. The Fightin' Engineers look for their first NCAA Tournament appearance this season, which would be guaranteed by winning next weekend's HCAC Tournament at Bluffton.
