WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology snapped a 6-6 tie with six runs in the eighth inning to defeat Capital University 12-6 in NCAA Division III baseball action on Monday in Winter Haven.
Rose-Hulman placed runners on second and third with one out, before back-to-back singles by David Burnside and Josh Koutnik made the score 8-6. Hazen Hamather later added an RBI single, before Caleb Kissel provided the big blow with a two-run single that put the Engineers ahead 12-6.
Kissel led the Rose-Hulman offense with three singles and three RBIs. Burnside and Hamather both had two singles, scored twice and recorded one RBI. Koutnik added two singles along with two RBIs. Drew Schnitz added a double, scored twice and recorded one RBI, and Zach Trusk scored twice to propel the offensive effort.
On the mound, senior Gunnar Hutchison entered in relief and pitched three shutout innings to pick up the win. Hutchison scattered three singles with one strikeout in his three-inning stint.
Daniel Walters led the Capital with a grand slam that helped turn an early 5-1 Capital deficit into a 6-5 lead. Rose-Hulman answered with one run in the sixth and six more in the eighth to secure the victory.
Rose-Hulman improved to 2-1 on its Florida Trip, while Capital dropped to 2-2. The Fightin' Engineers face off with John Carroll University on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Auburndale, Florida.
