Baseball Scores 30 Combined Runs in Saturday Sweep

HANOVER, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology scored a combined 30 runs in two games to sweep Hanover College 14-7 and 16-5 in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday in Southern Indiana.

The series will conclude with a single nine inning game on Sunday at noon. Live stats for Sunday's game will be available at the link above.

In the opener, the Fightin' Engineers tallied 14 hits and relied on two five-run innings to secure the victory.  Senior Caleb Kissel had three hits, including a double, with three RBIs and two runs scored.  

Seniors Kody Alayon, Patrick Klima, Josh Koutnik and Donnie Waters added two hits each.  Alayon scored twice with two RBIs, Klima scored two runs, Koutnik had one run and one RBI, and Waters recorded two RBIs to propel the balanced attack.

The offense was enough to help Karson Nixon earn his third win of the season.  Nixon struck out seven and allowed five hits in seven innings of work.  Jonathan Banks and Ian Grant recorded the final six outs to secure the victory.

In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman pounded out 17 hits and scored seven runs in the fifth inning to secure a doubleheader sweep.  Freshman David Burnside led the offensive effort with three hits, including two doubles, with three runs scored and one RBI.

Alayon, Klima, Zach Trusk, Zach Hull and Koby Close provided support to the offense with two hits each.  Alayon had a double, scored twice and recorded two RBIs.  Klima had a double with three RBIs.  Trusk also had a double with two runs scored.  Hull had two singles and scored three times.  Close contributed a pair of singles, one run and two RBIs.

Junior Drew Schnitz and senior Hazen Hamather also scored twice each for the Rose-Hulman offense in the nightcap.

Senior Andrew Stull pitched seven innings to move to 2-2 on the season.  Stull scattered nine hits with seven strikeouts.  Sophomore Chuck Alexa struck out three over the final two innings to finish the pitching performance.

Rose-Hulman improved to 11-5 overall and is tied for first in the HCAC at 4-1 in league play.  Hanover dropped to 5-14 and 2-5 in league games.  The Fightin' Engineers and Panthers conclude their three-game series with one nine-inning contest at noon on Sunday.
