TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology split a softball doubleheader with Manchester University, winning 2-0 before falling 9-3, on Thursday to open Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play at the Engineer Softball Field.
Senior Taylor Lockhart propelled the Fightin' Engineers to the game one victory with a complete game three-hit shutout. Lockhart allowed just three singles with five strikeouts to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Offensively, Rose-Hulman relied on timely hitting to score once in the first inning and once in the fourth in the game one win. Sophomore Michelle Korf had a single, a double and an RBI, and Maddie Struble contributed two singles in the opener. Senior Marissa Stout had a double and scored one run, and sophomore Jessica Will contributed a single and one run.
In the nightcap, Manchester hit four home runs to earn a 9-3 victory. Junior Morgan Dreyer led the Rose-Hulman offense with three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs. Will had two hits and also scored once in game two.
Rose-Hulman stands 10-8 overall and 1-1 in HCAC play, while Manchester has a record of 13-7 and 2-2 in league games. The Fightin' Engineers have had Saturday's doubleheader at Bluffton rescheduled for April 17, and are currently scheduled to travel to Defiance on Sunday.
