TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team will host its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday January 21, when the Fightin' Engineers square off against Transylvania University in a key Heartland Conference matchup.
The game marks the 11th annual game in which the women's basketball program has raised funds and awareness for breast cancer. The issue hits close to home for Rose-Hulman's head coach, Jon Prevo, who is a cancer survivor himself. Prevo's wife, Deanna, defeated breast cancer over a decade ago.
A presentation with 45 Wabash Valley breast cancer survivors will take place before the start of the women's game. The presentation will honor area survivors with all money raised from T-shirts sales, and other donations going directly to the Wabash Valley Breast Cancer Survivors, Inc., organization. Last year $1,300 was raised, bringing the 11-year total to around $10,000.
Breast Cancer Awareness t-shirts will be on sale at the game and all the proceeds from the gate will also be donated to Wabash Valley Breast Cancer Survivors, Inc. The funds will be presented by the team's upperclassmen at an upcoming group meeting.
The basketball contest features two of the top teams in the Heartland Conference. Rose-Hulman moved into sole possession of first place in the league on Wednesday January 18 after a 51-34 win at Earlham and a Bluffton loss to Defiance. The Fightin' Engineers lead the league with an 8-1 (13-3 overall) mark through the first cycle of conference games. Transylvania went 7-2 (13-3 overall) in the first round of league games but the Pioneers have won eight in a row since their last loss, which came against Rose-Hulman back on December 17.
In the first matchup between both schools Rose-Hulman defeated Transylvania 60-51 on December 17 in Lexington, Ky. RHIT needed a 19-9 surge in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Sophomore Abby Bromenschenkel scored a season-high 16 points in the game. TU leads the all-time series between both institutions but Rose-Hulman has won three straight in the series.
Rose-Hulman still boasts one of the stingiest defenses in the both the Heartland Conference. The Fightin' Engineers are No. 1 in the HCAC in points allowed per game (47.9) and rebounding margin (+10.3). Transylvania ranks No. 2 in scoring defense allowing only 54.1 ppg.
Sophomore Ally Bromenschenkel continues to lead RHIT in scoring (13.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg). She scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds, and had a career-high 4 steals in the win over Earlham on Jan. 18.
All fans in attendance will receive a free Chick-fil-a sandwich if the Fightin' Engineers score 60 points on Saturday. Fans will also receive a free dessert if RHIT scores 80 points Saturday.
Tipoff from Hulbert Arena on Saturday will follow the pre-game Breast Cancer Awareness presentation around 3:30 p.m.
